No Pride in Policing Coalition (NPPC) Abolitionist Pride is taking place in a time of on-going genocide of Palestinians by Israel, and the killing and ethnic cleansing of people in Sudan and Congo. In the US under Trump’s fascist and tyrannical rule we have witnessed the abduction and imprisonment of pro-Palestinian protesters and the criminalizing and deportation of immigrants to places like El Salvador and Venezuela. At the same time, he is deporting racialized immigrants, he has opened his borders to white Afrikaners, descendants of the apartheid system of South African claiming genocide at the hands of Black South Africans.
In this moment of genocide, ethnic cleansing, fascism and tyranny, non-binary and queer peoples’ livability is increasingly more at risk. One of Trump’s first acts as the newly elected leader of the US in 2025 was issuing a series of executive orders that struck down policies intended to protect Trans and non-binary peoples’ health and well-being. These executive orders have also reaffirmed the two-gender system of male and female. In Canada, Trans and non-binary people are facing horrendous attacks from the likes of Danielle Smith premier of Alberta who has implemented measures to limit gender-affirming care to transgender youth. We have witnessed the rise and seen the protests led by anti- trans groups aimed at eliminating Trans and non-binary peoples’ existence in this country.
At the national level Prime Minister Carney has presented plans to significantly increase defense spending, joining a European arms build-up, putting a limit on immigration which we are certain will be Black and racialized refugees fleeing civil wars, famines and genocide all instigated and perpetuated by western imperialist powers.
In Toronto we have seen the deployment and increase in militarization and surveillance technologies by The Toronto Police Services (TPS) that is meant to target and violently put down pro-Palestinian street protests, and on university campuses and encampments set up by unhoused people in public parks. The TPS has been emboldened to use increased violence against pro-Palestinian and all forms of protests in the city.
In 2024 Mayor Olivia Chow of Toronto threatened to deny police their requested budget increase of 46.2 million to their already ballooned budget of 1.1 billion only to give in to a pressure campaign in 2025. The mayor didn’t even put up a fight and has disappointed many within her own political base by validating the police repression of the local Palestine solidarity movement. The police have always been a tool of state repression and have become increasingly militarized. Toronto police and state security continue to enforce social inequality and violence while rewarded with ever-growing budgets, more powerful surveillance tools, and expanded legal authority. We have a city mayor that we simply cannot count on to check police powers nor to make decisions in the interest of the most marginalized and victimized in this City. For example, Mayor Chow did not defend the closures of safe consumption sites; she has not put funding towards more affordable housing for the unhoused including those who are queer and trans, Black and racialized, Individuate and Two-Spirit and African refugees living on the streets of Toronto.
This Abolition Pride as we take back the streets of Toronto, as we reclaim the political roots of Pride, we will chant, sing, love and celebrate each other. Pride belongs to Trans and Queers and those who support our liveability. It does not belong to corporate sponsors and pandering politicians. Queer and Trans liberation is a struggle against genocide, capitalism, racism, imperialism, settler colonialism and state repression. NPPC Abolition Pride refuses genocide, policing, and fascism!
WE DEMAND
• That the Canadian government ends its complicity with Israel as it continues its genocide of Palestinians in Gaza by imposing a total embargo.
• That Bill C- 2 be rescinded immediately. Bill C-2 known as the Strong Borders Act introduced by the Carney federal Government will endanger refugee claimants particularly queers and trans seeking asylum. We know that trans, queers and non-gendered conforming individuals who seek asylum face forms of gendered and sexual discrimination and violence at the border. In this new act, 14 days are allotted for claimants coming through the US and 1 year for those applying from inside Canada. This change reduces the period for making a refugee claim and will result in many refugees, queers, trans and non-gender conforming individuals being denied asylum.
• That Bill- 5 be rescinded immediately. Bill 5 known as the Protect Ontario by Unleashing our Economy Act, introduced by the Ford Government, and passed in the Ontario legislature, authorizes mining companies to invade and conduct extraction of minerals on Indigenous Treaty Land known as the Ring of Fire.
• The defunding, demilitarizing, and abolition of police and prisons and that those funds go to creating sustainability care and safety for disenfranchised communities.
• An end to the ever- increasing militarization and surveillance technologies used by police and security personnel that serves to target and criminalize Black, racialized queer and trans peoples.
• The rescinding of the Bubble Zone Bylaw meant to criminalize pro-Palestinian protests and other forms of protests, free expression, and the right to dissent.
• Ending All Attacks on Trans Liveability; Restore all Pathways to Trans Health and Gender-Affirming Care for trans peoples.
• Striking Down Laws Requiring Teachers to Report Students’ Chosen Pro-Nouns and Chosen Names to Parents
• Restoring Safe Consumption Sites and Refunding Harm Reduction Initiatives
• Decriminalizing Unhoused Communities including those living in Encampments
• The creation of affordable housing for refugees and those unhoused
• Decriminalizing Sex Work and Massage Parlour Work
