Abolish Police in Canada: A Pride Rally & Teach-in
1:30pm Sunday June 28, 2020, Nathan Phillips Square
The No Pride in Policing Coalition (NPPC) will be available to speak to media at a press conference just prior to the Abolish Police in Canada: A Pride Rally and Teach-in at 1:30pm Sunday June 28th at the Nathan Phillips Square stage. government commit to a pandemic response that prioritizes the rights and safety of workers and the health of marginalized communities,” reads the statement.
“Anti-Black, anti-Indigenous and racist police killings are not simply a US issue,” according to NPPC spokesperson Beverly Bain. “The most recent police killings of Regis Korchinski-Paquet in May, Chantel Moore, Ejaz Ahmed Choudry and Rodney Levi in June, and D’Andre Campbell in April, are just the tip of the iceberg of systemic Police violence against the most vulnerable members of our society,” she added.
“We are gathering to join the international and Canada-wide call for defunding, disarming and dismantling police on Pride Day in Toronto and send two clear messages,” added Gary Kinsman. “First, racist police murders against Black, Indigenous and Brown people are a pressing issue for Two-Spirit, Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Queer communities (2SLGBTQ); second, Pride is and always has been a political protest.”
The Sunday rally and teach-in also sends a message to Toronto City Council that current proposals by the Mayor and Councillors Matlow and Wong-Tam do not go far enough.government commit to a pandemic response that prioritizes the rights and safety of workers and the health of marginalized communities,” reads the statement.
The event is co-sponsored by a number of community organizations within and beyond the 2SLGBTQ community and will launch a broad public campaign calling for defunding, de-militarization, and abolition of Police forces in Toronto and across Canada. A statement of demands is gathering signatures from groups and individuals.
